Common ant species in Utah
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are among the largest ant species, often referred to as "giant ants." They are a common pest in Utah. These ants can grow up to an inch long and exhibit black or reddish-brown coloration.
Interestingly, despite their name, Carpenter ants do not consume wood. Instead, they excavate galleries within wood to create nests. This can cause significant structural damage to homes and trees.
Carpenter ants are opportunistic feeders, consuming a variety of food sources. Outdoors, they feed on insects, honeydew (a sugary substance secreted by some insects), and nectar. Indoors, they are attracted to readily available food sources such as pet food, sugary drinks, honey, jelly, and sweets.
Queen Carpenter ants possess the unique ability to grow wings and fly, allowing them to establish new colonies.
Pavement Ants
Pavement Ants are small, typically ranging from light brown to black in color. They are easily recognizable by their lighter-colored legs and the presence of vertical lines on their heads. These ants are approximately 2-3 millimeters long and possess 12-segmented antennae.
As their name suggests, Pavement Ants create nests within cracks in pavement, sidewalks, and driveways. This proximity to structures often leads them to invade homes or buildings in search of food sources. They are also commonly referred to as “sugar ants”.
Their diet consists primarily of sweet substances, dead insects, and protein. They are also known to scavenge for crumbs, leftovers, and other food scraps around or inside buildings.
While not typically aggressive, Pavement Ants can sting if provoked. However, biting behavior is uncommon.
Harvester Ants
Harvester Ants are easily identifiable by their vibrant coloration, ranging from bright red to dark red and sometimes even black. This striking appearance often leads to them being mistakenly called "Fire Ants" or "Red Ants."
These ants are well-adapted to arid environments, thriving in hot and dry areas like those found in Utah. Their diet primarily consists of seeds, vegetation, and fungi like mushrooms. To compensate for water loss due to their preference for basking in the sun, Harvester Ants have evolved to metabolize the fat content of the seeds they consume.
Red Harvester Ants are known for their aggressive nature. When threatened, they defend themselves by delivering a painful sting.
