Tired of swatting at pesky wasps buzzing around your kitchen or bathroom? These unwelcome visitors are more than just a nuisance. They can contaminate food, deliver painful stings, and even trigger allergic reactions. Here at Safe Chem Pest Control, we understand the frustration and the need for effective solutions.

Understanding Wasps:

Wasps are social insects that build nests near homes and readily enter buildings in search of food. They are highly adaptable and can thrive in various environments. While some species can be beneficial by controlling other insect populations, many wasp species become a nuisance when they invade homes.

The Importance of Wasp Control:

Wasps pose more than just an annoyance. They can:

  • Contaminate Food: Wasps are attracted to sugary drinks and food scraps, potentially transferring bacteria and other harmful microorganisms onto your food.

Common Wasps and Hornets in Utah

Paper Wasps

Paper Wasps are social insects known for their distinctive, open-faced nests constructed from a paper-like material. They meticulously chew wood fibers into pulp and then mold it into intricate, multi-tiered nests. These nests are typically found hanging from eaves, under branches, or in other sheltered locations. Paper Wasps are highly territorial and will vigorously defend their nests from perceived threats.

You can identify paper wasps from their open faced nests where you can directly see their young. They are also more slender compared to yellowjackets

Yellow Jackets

Yellowjackets are social wasps known for their aggressive behavior and painful stings. They are easily recognized by their black and yellow striped bodies, resembling bees. Yellowjackets are highly territorial and will readily defend their nests, which are typically constructed underground, in tree cavities, or even in wall voids.

These wasps are scavengers and are often attracted to human food sources, such as picnics, barbecues, and sugary drinks. They can become a significant nuisance, especially during late summer and early fall. Yellowjacket colonies grow much larger than paper wasps and can reach numbers of between 1,500 to 15,000 individuals! (Bring a bee suit for these ones!)

Bald-Faced Hornets

Bald-faced hornets are a species of wasp known for their aggressive behavior and painful stings. Unlike yellowjackets, they have predominantly black bodies with white or ivory markings on their face and abdomen. These social insects construct large, pear-shaped nests made of a paper-like material. These nests are typically found hanging from trees, shrubs, or even structures like eaves and utility poles.

Bald-faced hornets are highly territorial and will aggressively defend their nests from any perceived threat. Their stings are venomous and can cause significant pain, swelling, and even allergic reactions in some individuals.
