Common spider species in Utah

Black widow

The black widow is considered the most medically significant spider in Utah, and signings are common. The species of black widow that is prevalent in Utah is the Western black widow (Latrodectus hesperus). You can identify black widows by their unorganized and messy webs, also the females have the famous red hourglass on their abdomen. Male black widows are much smaller and appear as a brown color.

Wolf Spider

These medium to large spiders are often seen hunting on the ground. They are typically brown, gray, black, or tan with dark markings. Distinctive features include their hairy bodies and a unique eye arrangement: two large eyes in the middle row, four smaller eyes below, and two smaller eyes on top. Female wolf spiders are famous for carrying their egg sacs and then their young spiderlings on their backs. There are many different types of wolf spiders in Utah.

Yellow Sac Spiders

These small, pale spiders are commonly found in homes and gardens. They are often active at night and are known to cause painful bites. They typically build silken tubes or "sacs" in sheltered locations, such as under rocks, in leaf litter, or in the corners of buildings.
