How to identify Bark Beetles
Bark beetles are small, cylindrical insects that bore into the bark of trees.
Look for small holes in the bark, sawdust-like material (frass) at the base of the tree, and discolored or dying foliage. Inspect the bark for signs of pitch tubes (resin oozing from the tree in an attempt to defend itself). If you suspect an infestation, carefully peel back a small section of bark to examine for galleries (tunnels created by the beetles). They can sometimes be misidentified as termites when looking at the damage in the trees.
The best way to identify damage by bark beetles is to look for the “galleries” that they make. It looks like an oval shape with many tubes coming out of it. They will make these all over the tree underneath the bark.
