5 Tips to protect your trees from pests in Utah

The best thing you can do to prevent bark beetles or other wood destroying insects is to have healthy trees. However, that is easier said then done. Maintaining healthy trees requires proper pruning, fertilization, watering, and choosing the correct species of tree for the climate you are planting it in. Another great way to prevent the attack of these pests is to be proactive. Preventative treatments to kill these pests can be crucial in making sure your trees don’t become the breeding ground for these destructive insects.

While Bark Beetles are not the only threat to your trees, they are among the most dangerous. Other notable aggressors are the Emerald Ash Borer, Japanese Beetles and Aphids. Some of these insects can transmit diseases to your trees as well and this can be of more concern than the insect itself.

5 Tips to help keep your trees Healthy

  1. Be sure to plant trees at the correct depth. The depth of the tree as well as the surrounding soil can make a huge impact on your trees health. Unfortunately, this can only be done when the tree is young.

  2. Be sure to water your trees enough. Trees need more water than you think! I had a very knowledgeable arborist tell me that you even need to water your trees during the winter to maintain good health.

  3. Give your trees enough room. When you are selecting the planting spot of your tree, be sure it will have enough room to reach full maturity comfortably. Make sure it is not too close to your home, other trees, or utility lines.

  4. Choose the correct tree for your environment. Some trees just cannot survive where they are not supposed to be. Consult with an arborist to help identify good tree species for your area and soil composure.

  5. Be mindful of the species you are planting. Some trees attract certain pests (Like the Boxelder tree and the Boxelder bug). Other trees will drop seeds/fruit all over your yard which can attract rodents and pests as well. Plan ahead on how each particular tree will work for or against you!

We are excited to start offering preventative treatments against Bark Beetles, Carpenter Ants, Borers, Aphids, and other pests that attack your trees and yard.
